Choosing Your Domain Name

Prerequisites:

In order to successfully complete this daily action, you will need:

  1. A brand or company name.
  2. A pad of paper or an electronic document
  3. Your imagination

Estimated Time for Completion: 30 minutes – 1 hour

Details:

Choosing the right domain name for your company can be a challenge these days.  Chances are, if you haven’t already secured your domain name, you will probably be unable to register your actual company name as a domain name.  To help you find a domain name that works well for your company, you may need to try variations of your name or you may need to add an additional action term.

As you come up with names, be sure to check to see if they are available using a site like Domainpeople.com or an iPhone app like Domain Scout. Let’s take a look at some examples of how you can choose the right domain name for your tourism business:

  1. Your company name: If your company name is something like San Francisco Tours LLC. then you may want to try “sanfranciscotours.com”.
  2. If your company name is not available, then I recommend you try an alternative spelling or an abbreviation, for example, you might try “sanfrantours.com” or “sftours.com”.
  3. Failing that, you can always try adding an adjective or an action word, such as “experiencesanfrantours.com” or gosanfrantours.com”.

There are a number of registries besides just the “.com” such as “.net”, “.org”, “.tv”, etc.  If your preferred domain name is not available in the “.com” registry, you can always try a different one.  Just remember that, for the most part, most people look for domains based on the “.com”, so if you can get that one, it is highly recommended that you do so.

If you need some inspiration, there are a number of domain suggestion sites.  Be warned though, these sites will try to get you to register your domain through their preferred domain registry.

  1. Domain Tools
  2. Name Tumbler
  3. Make Words
  4. Name Boy

Outcome:

If you are successful at completing this daily action, you will have come up with one or more domain names to register. Now take a break and save the list for the next daily action.

Great tips. This is something hard to change after-the-fact so it's a good idea to get it right. (though right is subjective opinion!)

It is hard to change after the fact, but you can always add domains later if required. The thing to keep in mind is that you may end up causing brand confusion if you use a totally different brand.
