PhoCusWright Travel Innovator: Uptake

2008-11-18

Uptake is travel search engine that is about activities, things to do and lodging for destinations. The system aggregates review data and combines it into a consolidated sourcefor travel information.  The site is completely engine agnostic and pushes leads to the site that customer prefers.

The number one reason why Google search became the premier search is because they put all the information out infront the user.  Uptake is using the same model even it means losing some leads to direct to supplier bookings.  Uptakes primary revenue source is as a lead generator.

There are some very interesting opportunities for suppliers to take advantage of a product like Uptake because it means that small suppliers can have an impact on the buying process by listing themselves in the engine.  The idea is that eventually Uptake will become the site of choice of all these products.

The Uptake site is only available for the U.S. for now but there is talk about expanding into the Canadian market.  This seems to be a natural extension and will serve the North American market well.

  • Nice post Stephen.
The SE's will definitely be losing touch with the travel market (and all markets for that matter) without some profound rethinking. It's already happening, I know of many travel sites already getting comparable levels of traffic from social sites and niche community sites.
I think the smart people especially Google will start buying up the very best in niche industries not just general media and technology.
I wouldn't be remotely suprised if Google puts some big travel partnerships or even acquisitions together before long - and if they do it won't be the static content sites or the big money boys. It won't even be trip advisor. (but what do I know!)

    All the best

  • Ed! It's great to hear from you. I actually mentioned your site to the guys from TravelBeen.com which is another innovator at the show. They are also from New Zealand. There might be some nice synergies between your two companies.

With regards to your comment, I have to agree with you. We have been waiting for the large search engines to launch travel specific search but they just don't seem interested. I think they are more interested in waiting for someone else to innovate and then they can just buy them up.
  • Hey Stephen,

I just emailed you. Want to get your expert thoughts on some ideas. In fact I want to source you on something. I think you'll enjoy.
