Social Media Advisors Must Lead by Example
I first saw Sean Moffitt do his “Word of Mouth” presentation at the Canada-e-connect conference in Vancouver in November of 2007. Since that time I’ve followed his blog and facebook-stalked him a bit. I noticed a facebook feed that caught my attention titled “Sean Moffitt posted To Advise Social Media, You Have to Be Social Media on TypePad.”
I couldn’t agree with Sean more on his views. Sean’s views are a confirmation of Joseph Thornley’s post called “Social Media Authorship is Mandatory for Credibility as an Advisor“. As you can probably guess the article states that in order to be considered an expert in social media you have to be a social media practitioner. One would think that this is pretty obvious, however, it seems that a number of PR firms and boutique marketing companies are adding social media to their services without any evidence that they have any experience or even any understanding of social media techniques or tools.
So, if you are considering adding social media to your marketing mix, make sure that you do your research and make sure the company or consultant you choose is a true expert and not a wannabe. Thanks for the inspiration Sean and if you are interested in reading Sean’s post, you can read it here.
